DescriptionEffective today (July 1, 2026), Finland has officially authorized the transit and temporary import of nuclear weapons for defense purposes within the framework of the alliance. Defense Minister Antti Hykkänen previously stated that there are no plans for permanent nuclear weapon bases on Finnish territory during peacetime. Nevertheless, to test NATO’s nuclear deterrence standards, the alliance may announce the participation of special forces in joint summer-fall exercises on Finnish territory. All eyes are on whether an official announcement of such exercises with a nuclear component will be made by the end of July.
ConditionsYes: if, between July 16 and 27, 2026, NATO Headquarters or the Finnish Ministry of Defense officially announces plans to conduct exercises involving the transit or temporary import of mock-ups or actual components of nuclear warheads. No: if no official announcements regarding nuclear exercises on Finnish territory are made during the specified period.
